Journal

This journal has gone to partial "friends only" journal to allow me to talk about rl stuff as well as FF. Fandom, Final Fantasy XI and some entries will be unlocked, there will be some real life locked stuff.

I should be more bothered than I am at dropping a fair amount of money on this. But all I got is 'yay Steampunk!' and 'yay Bruce Boxleitner'? I swear it's like LET ME GIVE YOU ALL MY MONEY.

I don't know why I bother trying to write fic on my computer. I get writer's block so easily.

Put a pen and paper in my hand... Off we go!

Well, hello there my new permanent home. The latest changes that LJ have made have finally made the decision for me. I'm buying paid time here when I can afford it. I can't cope with the new bastardised version they are producing, a cross between Tumblr and Facebook. Reblogging (okay, they call it reposting, but that's what it is). Liking. If I want to do that, I'll go to the facilities on te internet that allow me to do that in a far superior manner.

Livejournal have decided not to listen to anyone, and just force these changes on us. Hell, even Tumblr gives us the option to turn off the infinite scrolling. LJ is just forcing it down our throat. I joined LJ from having a Wordpress journal 8 years ago. It had the functionality I was looking for. Now it doesn't. Dreamwidth does.

I was reading the comments on the release notes, and all the complaining. 99% of the comments there do not want this, Livejournal. Good, well articulated arguments. Someone pointed out that LJ do not know the meaning of beta testing, and that one struck home for me. I've been involved with beta testing before, seen how changes are implemented. LJ thinks beta testing means 'a short period for people to get used to it before we press the 'yes' button'. Smart companies listen to your user base, especially when it is as vocal as LJ's.

The killer is that the layout for the friend list actually set my eyes streaming within five minutes. I'm terrified to use it for any period of time because I'm scared it'll trigger a migraine. The only reason I will be using LJ is for rp at [profile] hearts_andminds, but I am going to have to test the waters with that. If LJ continue down this path, and bring in everything else they are rumoured to, I don't know if I can use it any more. For the sake of my health, above and over everything else. Dreamwidth isn't perfect, but a site that actually listens to the majority of users gets my vote, and my money.

So, I said this year was going to be the year I posted more about books and what I've read, so as I've just finished my first book of the year, time to start.

1. The Hobbit Rating 4/5

Okay, so a re-read technically, but I hadn't read it for a long time, and it was one of the books of the month for my sci-fi/fantasy reading group.

And I don't know, but I actually struggled a little with it. Possibly because I have this whole memory and mythos built up around the whole Tolkien series, the movies, and rereading LoTR, but the Hobbit felt almost too childish now - and not even on a level with some of the good YA books. The prose was very dated, and stylistically I wasn't as impressed as before. The story is still a good one, and there is so many portents of what is to come in LoTR. But I wanted more about the Necromancer, and things like that.

Of course, there could be a number of factors affecting how I feel - I normally read my illustrated copy, but it was in the loft, so it was Kindle this time, which may have affected my enjoyment. Starting it just after the trailer was released was possibly not the best idea ever. That trailer. In Jackson I trust. Possibly a bad move, but if anyone can do it, it's him.

But it's been a while since I've been glad to finish a book to move onto the next one, which is a fascinating response from me. Onward. Next up for me: Spider Bones by Kathy Reichs, and Manhatten in Reverse by Peter F Hamilton.

How about the utter bullshit that is the new layout for LJ? Do you just not care anymore?

Soooooo. Last night's Sanctuary. And THAT scene

Bear in mind I am a self-confessed Teslen shipper, but I'm not as rabid as some would appear to be... I am also tired, so prepare for a ramble. Under a cut because of obvious spoilers.

Cut for spoilers to Chimera )

In conclusion? Sanctuary fandom is even more batshit insane than Glee fandom. And that takes some doing.

I'm back from the wilds of Scotland! And it really was the wilds. Snow. No internet. Nothing going on outside...

So what did I do? I got a new hat? I managed to fall while at Oxford changing buses and my knee has an amazing bruise? I actually managed to pretty much finish a ficathon piece one day? I found an amazing author I had never read and devoured a book of his?

ie Nothing much.

But on the other hand, Halloween festival in WoW?

So what's new in the world of me?

Definite signs that the last operation was a success. Yes, I know they said it will take up to six months for me to find out for sure, but steps in the right direction are most welcome.

My parents leaving me with knitting and crochet stuff has led to me deciding that I quite like knitting. I used to do it like 25 years ago, but have found it relatively easy to pick up again. New hobbies good? I think so.

I'm not giving up being a geek though. Portal 2 was absolutely awesome. Like amazingly awesome. I still have the coop to do though, and will find someone, dammit!

I'm going to Glee live on Saturday in London. Haters to the left please, I'm going to have fun, and get to meet a couple of the other Glee rp'ers I've interacted with.

Peter F Hamilton's writing is still as amazing as ever - I'm finally sitting down and reading the Void trilogy now that I have them all (and a signed copy of the third book yay!). I've been reading a lot more lately, though I have a serious addiction to buying books from charity shops. It's worrying, really, but hey, there are worse things to be addicted to!

One thing I have noticed about having a Kindle is my reading habits have changed ever so slightly. I've become more target driven, if you like, when I read. Instead of 'oh I'll get to a convenient end of chapter/break point', I work in percentages more. 'Oh, I'll just get to 35% of the book read before I go to sleep'. It's bizarre. Even when I'm reading a paperback, I'll think '800 page book, I'll get to page 100 before bed.' Most bizarre. And random. I'm good at random!

Ok people. You can tell I'm feeling better, can't you?!

Firstly. Dr Who. What the FUCK just happened?

Glee finale. Er, okay? S3 wishes. More Tina. Lots more Tina. No character assassination of Artie. Artie singing Let it Be. My OTP back together. I'd be happy with that.

I might have been playing a little too much Portal/Portal 2, as I'm totally working on a plot for [livejournal.com profile] hearts_andminds where GLaDOS turns parts of the village into a test centre.

I'm looking for things to watch. On my list is S4 of Chuck, catching up on Fringe and Supernatural, but I'm open to ideas. You guys know the kind of things I watch, so suggestions are welcome!
