For those who know me, they know that I am trying to level up fishing as my main craft, with cooking alongside it. Now, fishing is fairly straight forward to make a steady amount of cash. Yes, you won't make a signed SH+1, but on the other hand, you won't bust someone's hard-worked-for Venemous Claw... You can aim for profit most of the way along your fishing career, but from about 60+, this becomes difficult due to rod breaks. The answer to this - get yourself a Lu Sheng's fishing rod.

This quest has to be the most retarded that SE came up worth. Turn over 10,000 moat carp and get the legendary rod. Let me impress on you that number... ten THOUSAND carp. That works out at 833.33 stacks of carp. But with that rod, you can land fish like Gigant Squid, Black Sole and Grimmonites regularly, making nice steady cash.

The problem is how to get those 10,000 carp. You can fish them up, or you can buy off the AH. Now fishing them up used to be ok, but since they introduced hard fatigue in fishing, the most you can fish up is the equivalent weight of 200 moat carp a day. That takes 50 days of solid moat carp fishing just to fish em up. And we all know you end up fishing up other crap and monster, so lets drop the figure, on a good day to 150 carp. That is 66 days to fish up Lu Shengs. I fished for carp for 3 hours solid the other day (minus some ls chatting) and got 84...

So, the way most people do it is fish up for profit (for instance, my profit fish would be shall shells, which would give me skill as well, although slowly, and sell them at around 25k a stack), then buy the carp. That was ok until yesterday when moat carp reach 11k a stack... That puts buying your way to a Lu Shengs at just over 9 million gil... Until recently it was around 5k a stack, which put it at just over 4 mill gil to buy the fish. So... I dunno what to do now. I think I will be fishing up my carp, and also using mules to fish them up as well. This is gonna be a major pain in the backside =(

And then once you finally get the rod, you may cry when you realize that it's not a magical fishing rod, and in fact, for certain fish, inferior to other rods. I still believe it is worth getting, but after 10,000 moat carp, it really is a disappointment to me.

It's true that I've had only one line break since I got it (and that was on a coral fragment in Sea Serpent Grotto), and it's true that I've never got a "the fish was too small for your rod" message, but when I can catch Black Sole, something like 46 levels above my fishing skill, with a Halcyon Rod, and can't even come close to depleting it to 50% with my Lu Shang's, it makes me very sad.

I also seem to have better "luck" fishing since completing the quest. I catch fewer items and fewer mobs than my husband's character, but it's subjective, as we haven't kept tallies. For that, it's not the rod, since my luck holds even if I let him use the rod.

Best of luck with your quest! I know we got discouraged in the middle, but the final 2K carp went very quickly.
